Georgetown Poem

The Smells of Georgetown

Clean soaps of the Lush shop,
Mothballs and must of the numerous antique stores,
Sharp spices from the local Abercrombie and Fitch store,
Hair creams and shampoos waft out of swanky hair salons,
Lush greenery and colorful flowers that line the residential streets,
Murky canal water, where ducks frolic feet away from raw sewage,
Fresh wood signaling the start of a new series of local establishments,
Window cleaner as a Mexican eatery gets ready to welcome the lunch rush,
Hot exhaust of buses carrying hoards of tourists trying to escape the DC scene,
Fresh soles of new shoes from a trendy sports department in an old brick building,
Barbecue smoke that fills the air as classy restaurants gear up for the busy day ahead,
Ice cream and pastries make my mouth water more and more each bake shop we pass,
Starchy diner grease reminds me of weekly late-night “dinners” with my friends back home,
Coffee beans nearly everywhere we turn- from piping hot cups to small shops to chain stores,
Sawdust and construction signifies the expanding industrialism even in a quaint town such as this.
